Watch the sunrise over the desert during the drive, which is just over three hours long, then make the first stop of the day at the rock-cut temples of King Ramses II. The temples, now listed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were moved piece by piece when the Aswan High Dam was built across the Nile River, creating Lake Nasser. You’ll see towering, monumental statues that represent great, ancient kings and queens, but look closely and you’ll find Abu Simbel’s breathtaking detail, from playful baboons to intricate, carved walls.
